Description
Steer (Middle East) produces a warm and classic sound with crisp slaps, round open tones, rich bass and controlled overtones. It has medium action, very smooth and somewhat supple playing surface, and is ideal for live and studio applications. It is the most versatile skin type we offer, and our shop favorite!

After consulting the information in the faq on the Web site, I ordered directly from the Web site two skins, one for quinto and one for conga. I experienced a prompt confirmation, a good follow up platform and a fast delievery, in Canada. The skins were perfect, as described. The skins sound great! Thank you to the Manito Percussion team. We did not have to talk this time, but maybe we will have the occasion to do so one day. Best regards.

I have purchased numerous Middle East Steer skins from Swen for my congas. They make my drums sound great. Swen is very knowledgeable and experienced, and always recommends the perfect thickness of skin for the sound I am seeking from my drums. Additionally, I have purchased several crown rims and custom formed tuning lugs made by Ryan (“Manito”). The rims always fit perfectly and the lugs are super strong, allowing for precise tuning at all tensions. I highly recommend Manito Percussion to all drummers. The drumming community is lucky to have Manito Percussion as a source for excellent products.

I have been Playing ,Teaching ,Performing African /Caribbean and Cuban Drums since 1980.I live in the UK. I have worked with Antelope ,Goat ,Mule , Camel and Cowhides (re skinning drums ) since 1984 .
For me personally (as well as students and clients I repair Drums afor ) Manito Percussion are #1 hands down .
Manito Percussion Skins are as professional as they come ,and customer service ,aftercare and packaging and delivery are second to none .
Why purchase from companies that neither drum or care for the Drummers they provide products to ,only to find out when something goes wrong ,they cannot relate through personal experiences? (as they’re only concern is maximum profit)
Swen and team are excellent Drummers ,who make their own Drums ,rims ,steel hoops and hardware ,and provide the best professional hides in the world, and meets every need of both modern and traditional Drummers
Ps,I’m not sponsored by Manito Percussion ,I did this survey in order to point others to the one stop shop for the serious Conguero,Percussionist and Drummer
21 Drum Salute to Manito ,for setting standards other Percussion companies only dream of obtaining (all about The Love for Drum)

I’m very happy with the skin. Perfect thickness as you suggested for my requinto. I found a great way to put the skin on that most people don’t talk about. Punch about 12 holes around the perimeter of the skin before installing, put flesh hoop on, then use cord to pull the edges toward the middle. Then the crown ring goes on really easy and there is equal tension on the whole skin, and wrinkles are not an issue. Thanks!

Went with the recommendation for head size; changed the sound of the drums for the better. Used on Gon Bops California series quinto and conga. Tried three different heads prior and was seriously considering new drums, these sounded great before break-in.
Edward Leathers –
The Gon Bops vintage quinto could not possibly sound better. 2.0 Mid East steer is thick but is without ringing and is hyper responsive.Has little bass but that’s OK. By the way; I do not like these new synthetic heads.
Just (animal skins, wood and metal,)… Plastic….like AI is soulless.
Great company…They are serious and responsive. Thanks!!!Manito

The skin was as expected, 22 in. was perfect install for my tumba. Still tuning the drum for now but it is sounding better everyday.
What would you recommend for a dampener?
Swen –
Hi Wally. I don’t recommend any dampeners. If the sound is too bright and resonant, a thicker skin is recommended. The thicker the skin, the dryer and more woody the sound becomes.
